From January 1, 2019 to May 30, 2019, the Monitoring Center of the State Food and Drug Administration received a total of 658 adverse reports related to disposable urinary catheter, of which 318 were reports of latex Foley Catheter, accounting for 48.3%.
Petroleum-based lubricants such as liquid paraffin and petroleum jelly have a swelling effect on natural latex materials. Inflated Ureteral catheters’ balloons form a thin-walled structure, which increases the risk of burst under the action of petroleum-based lubricants.
For those indwelling catheter made of natural latex, water-soluble lubricant is recommended.
