Why does the doctor put on the anesthesia mask for the patient before the operation? The answer is not as simple as you think

We usually see on TV that an anesthesia mask on their faces during surgery. What is the usage of this anesthesia mask? Is it to let the patient sleep with inhaled anesthetics?

In fact, what this mask provides is not anesthetics, but high-concentration oxygen, which is often used when patients need general anesthesia.

This is because when the anesthesiologist puts you under general anesthesia, you will fall into an unconscious state, and you will not breathe spontaneously at this time. The doctor needs to put a tube into your trachea.

Then connect to the ventilator to maintain your breathing.

But you can't breathe before inserting this tube, so you need to inhale high concentration oxygen before anesthesia.

In this way, oxygen is stored in your lungs in advance. However, after the tracheal intubation is completed, some anesthetics will still be released in this mask. Keep you under anesthesia.
