70% of global Medical devices are manufactured in China by OEM.

During the 7th China medical device Industry Development Forum held recently in Shanghai, Cai Dongan, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicines and Health Products, pointed out that "70% of the world's Medical consumables were manufactured by Chinese companies, but not necessarily under their own brand names, as they may have been produced in the OEM way. China has very few brands with their own intellectual property rights."

From 2 years back, China's economic growth slowed down, driving the transformation of "quality" in structural adjustments towards more balanced, higher value, and more sustainable growth. The country's international trades for the medical devices such as Respiratory products, Anesthesia Products, Urology Products as well as Surgical Products also experienced a slowdown in growth with a 3.56% increase in exports and a 5.52% increase in imports, resulting in a trade surplus of $4.252 billion. However, medical equipment for diagnosis and treatment remained in deficit, with imports exceeding exports. It was noted that although 70% of the world's medical products were manufactured by Chinese companies, they may not necessarily carry a Chinese brand as many were produced through OEM arrangements.

The "One Belt, One Road" initiative is helping to create Chinese brands. According to Cai Donan, China's Disposable medical products have few intellectual property rights and self-owned brands. The national strategy of "One Belt, One Road" provides an environment and conditions for the development of independent brands for medical devices in China. The initiative covers a population of 7.9 billion and has a total GDP of $35 trillion in the countries and regions involved. China's exports of medical devices to Asian countries account for 35.5% of the entire export market, while China needs to import a large amount of medical device raw materials from Central Asian countries. Instead, it would be better to directly import polymer products to Central Asian countries, assemble them there, and sell them locally. Cai Dongan believes that with China's economy entering a new normal, entrepreneurs will focus more on product innovation and quality control. They will also increase their awareness of patent protection, demand higher stability and uniformity in products, have stronger willingness for industry-university-research alliances, and focus more on practical promotion.
